Exercise and Brain Power - MOVE WELL TO BE WELL

March 7, 2016

Welcome to the first of a 3-part blog series on the impact of exercise, nutrition, and meditation just on NEUROLOGICAL FUNCTION alone (of course we all know about the great all-over-body benefits, but for now let’s just focus on brainpower!)

Did you know we now have evidence that the brain is capable of rejuvenating itself throughout life? As unbelievable as that sounds, studies show that exercise produces large cognitive gains, improving memory, and fighting dementia...a study of 600 people over the age of 70 proved that those who engaged in the most exercise had the least amount of brain shrinkage in a three-year period. How you say? “Brain volume” is typically related to the AGE of the brain, but we now see that by increasing blood flow to your brain (through exercise), you’re also increasing production of nerve-protecting compounds, protecting old neurons, creating new neurons, and even creating new neural pathways.

And since we’re on the subject of the “brainy” side effects of exercise, you might also be interested to read this Duke University study on how 30 minutes of aerobic exercise, 3 to 5 time a week, cuts depressive symptoms by 50% in young adults: http://www.livetradingnews.com/let-happiness-be-the-reason-to-exercise-132458.htm

So move well and be well!
